Chapter 15

“I don’t know, Orson. It just didn’t feel right.”

We were in the trailer. I was perched on the stool, Orson was on the floor, trying to fix a leak in the office sink, and Edison was sitting at the desk, sipping coffee and going through the morning’s work orders.

“Why’s that?” Orson’s voice echoed a little, which wasn’t surprising, since it was currently tucked inside the cabinet that housed the drain and water lines. One arm was in the cabinet; the other was flailing uselessly, trying to grab a monkey wrench that was just out of reach. “Say, Steve, could you hand me my wrench?”

“Ah, I don’t think I should do that. Beezy is really mad at me right now. He told me to keep away from his employees.”

“I’ll get it,” Edison said, getting up from his chair. “After all, it’s my job, not yours.”

He handed the wrench to his boss. “Now, Orson, before you fiddle with the trap, let me…”

“Agh!”

“…drain the water out of the sink first.” Edison made eye contact with me and shook his head.

Orson’s own head popped out of the cabinet, hair and beard soaked. His assistant tossed him a towel. It had a little motor oil on it but was the cleanest thing in the room, other than my suit, of course.

Edison frowned. “I don’t understand. Why would you care if Beelzebub is mad at you? I thought that was the whole point.”

My hands were clasped in front of me, thumbs twiddling as I thought. “No, the real point was bugging Satan, and,” I added hurriedly, still clinging to my feeble excuse for motive, “to ease suffering. But…”

“But what? Here, give me that.” Edison took the towel from his boss and dried Orson’s hair like a mom might take care of her kid’s mop on bath night.

“Well, it’s complicated. I don’t mind antagonizing almost any devil or demon, and especially Satan, but Beezy, well, he was very kind to me when I was a demon.”

“Beezy was kind?” Orson said in astonishment.

There was a warning rumble that we could feel through the linoleum. “When I was a demon!” I shouted, looking wide-eyed at the two of them. “That’s a big difference, you know. Devils and demons stick together. And ‘kind’ is probably not the right word. Let’s just say he gave me good advice. Beezy isn’t kind to anyone. He’s as mean and evil as they come!”

The rumbling at our feet stopped, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Nice save. “Let’s just say that, because of the years I worked for him, I’d rather not cause Beelzebub any trouble.”

After Edison finished his ministrations, Orson continued. “It seems to me that, while an interesting idea, bringing saved souls down to Hell on a guided tour was a bit over the top.”

I scowled. “Apparently Heaven agrees with you, or at least they do now, after Satan filed a formal protest with the Powers on High. I’ve been told to cease and desist.”

“Why can’t you just do what you were doing before?” asked Edison.
